The Young Blood Gallery

The “Golden Blizzard” exhibition at the Young Blood Gallery expecting nothing less than the wacky / experimental shows I have seen in the gallery before…and as I pulled up front door I was happy to see the same wacky orange-ish hula-hooping elephant that landmarks the building and a large mob of artsy hipsters outside. Inside the two-sided building you find a typical, open ceiling, industrial gallery space, however YoungBlood took special care to add something special to their space. The walls in the gallery are decorated in a loose cartoony landscape as opposed to the solid white walls often utilized in other more mainstream places. I believe it complimented the work showing without taking away from the pieces at all. It made the area feel more intimate and a ton less intimidating. The gallery curators took special care to create an inviting space, they hired a banjo player to lighten up the mood and even had a dog…I think its name was Rosco…who kept people smiling.

The artists, a seven member art collective from atl consisting of : Ellen Black, Errol Crane, Jennifer Kornder, Alex Kvares, Ann-Marie Manker, Jordan Reece, and Daniel Upton call themselves "Golden Blizzard." They were having a great time, they all dressed up in wacky white and gold outfits, one even had the words “Golden Blizzard” engraved on the butt of his shorts. Alex Kvares ran around stamping everyone's hands with custom made "Golden Blizzard" stamps. it made it easier to talk to him and he explained that "golden Blizzard" comes a long and hard to explaing inside joke.

In the corner of the gallery a huge plane made from cloth and some kind of soft filling served as a couch, however a had no idea until i left because no one was sitting on it. The artists and the atmosphere were so inviting and fun they made me want to stay all night and I am sure it was helpful to the attached building of the Young Blood Gallery, which includes a shop where you can buy handmade clothes, wallets, an assortment of vintage planters, prints from your favorite Atlanta artists, one of many art collection books or even a set of dinner plates. It is an incredibly trendy store and the prices are really not too bad. They even sell emo wrapping paper with skulls on it, heh. The Gallery was free to enter, which is always good and the drawings inside were only around $60 a pop…they were created on small sheets of paper that were all hand cut out to the same sizes and doodled upon to the artist’s content. It made for a surprise around every corner from killer roosters to lochness monsters…this show was a pleasure to attend.
